If you’ve already got the itch and can’t wait for the fall to get your deer hunting fix then it’s time to take up shed hunting. Here are some guidelines to help you get started.

  • Use your scouting skills to determine what areas will present the best odds of finding them, like near food or water sources.
  • Scout them out by using trail cams late in the season to determine when those local bucks shed their racks.
Be an apprentice and try to go with some who has experience finding them. A lot of what makes a good shed hunter comes down to instinct and practice.
  • Keeping moving, shed hunting isn’t for the arm chair hunter as it requires a lot of hiking, trail blazing and scouting to be successful.
  • Hounds help and are invaluable shed finding assets if you want to get into this seriously.
  • Find a deer trail and keep following it. Unpressured deer are creatures of habit and are likely using the same trail today as they did when they lost their rack.
